Today we drink 2020 Clos d’Argentine Malbec Gran Reserva, and immediately I am suspicious because label is too honest. No poem. No spiritual journey. No winemaker staring at sunrise while questioning life choices. Just facts about wine. Very unsettling. I almost checked bottle for hidden camera because in modern wine world, this level of honesty usually means either disaster… or something dangerous like competence.
First glass—oh yes. I like this very much. Good puckeryishness (yes, tannins, but I prefer word that sounds like it could be illegal in three countries), medium fruit, and then boom—spice comes in stronger than fruit. This is correct order of operations, comrades. Fruit should introduce itself politely, then spice should take over like stern Soviet aunt at family dinner. Very satisfying structure, not soft, not confused, not apologizing for existing.
Went extremely well with burger, which is best scientific test for any Malbec. If wine cannot survive meat juice, cheese, and bun chaos, then it is not wine—it is disappointment in glass. This Gran Reserva handled it with dignity. Maybe even pride. At around $9.99, this is what I call honest trade: I give small money, bottle gives me proper wine experience, nobody lies, nobody cries. This is how economy should work.
