The 2020 True Oak Cabernet Sauvignon from Napa arrives with a back label that basically gives itself a standing ovation. Apparently it “exemplifies the best and truest vineyard and winemaking.” Bold claim, True Oak. Bold. Then come the icons: vegan, gluten-free, non-GMO, sustainably certified… I half expected a sticker saying it recycles your emails and walks rescue dogs on weekends. All very wholesome. Very virtuous. I just wanted to know if it tasted good.
Turns out… yeah, it actually does. Medium puckerishness (that’s tannins for the people who don’t swirl dramatically), a nice jammy flavor without veering into candy land, and not overly oaky despite the name shouting “OAK” at me like it’s trying to win a tree contest. Easy drinking, balanced, and didn’t punch me in the face with alcohol or sugar. Always appreciated.
I paired it with taco meat in a bowl because that’s what adulthood looks like sometimes. The wine clearly wanted a proper slab of steak—something with hooves and a backstory—but it soldiered on and made the best of the situation. Respect. Next time I’ll try to give it the red-meat co-star it deserves.
At around $8.99, this is a solid buy-again bottle. It talks a big game on the label, but thankfully the wine in the glass backs it up enough to avoid eye-rolling. Virtuous, drinkable, and happy to hang out with whatever protein you manage to cook. That’s all I’m asking for.
